The Land Use Policy Planning Department was initially established as the Land Use Policy Planning Division, under the Ministry of Land Development and Mahaweli Development in 1983, with the objective of advising the Inter Ministerial Co-coordinating committee for Land Use and Development, to assist with the formulation and implementation of Land Use Policies and to develop a Land Information System. With the recruitment of District Land Use Planning Officers in 1988 land use planning activities of the division were extended to the district level, and with the appointment of Land Use Planning Assistants in 2005 the activities were further extended to the Divisional Secretary level. In the year 2010, The Division was upgraded to the status of a Department and given more responsibilities. At present the Department operates under the Ministry of Lands and Land Development.
Land Use Planning activities are being undertaken in 25 Districts and in each District, the activities are supervised by a District Land Use Planning Officer (DLUPO). The DLUPO also supervises the planning activities of Assistant Land Use Planner and Land Use Planning Assistants at the Divisional Level. All the District level and Divisional level officers are supervised and guided by the Director, assisted by a team of specialists at the Head Office including a Deputy Director of Land Use Planning and Assistant Directors of Agronomy, Information Systems, Land Use Planning and Sociology.
